Quality in Higher Education

Quality refers to “Fitness for the purpose”  or “ Degree of Excellence”  and it can be defined as the process of verifying or determining whether products or services meet or exceed customer expectations. Quality Assurance is a process-driven approach with specific steps to help define and maintain goals. This process considers design, development, production, and service.

The four QA steps can be summarized as follows:

Plan: Establish objectives and processes required to deliver the desired results.

Do: Implement the process developed.

Check: Monitor and evaluate the implemented process by testing the results against the predetermined objectives.

Act: Apply actions necessary for improvement of the results that require changes.

Quality Control

Quality Control (QC) is a process employed to ensure a certain level of quality in a product or service. It may include whatever actions a business deems necessary to provide for the control and verification of certain characteristics of a product or service. The basic goal of QC is to ensure that the products, services, or processes provided meet specific requirements.

Difficulties affecting QAHE

Educational process is expressed as a long run process.

There are no concrete specifications and standards for the quality standards as in other productions and services fields.

Educational process is a circulating process.

Educational process is highly affected by the environment.

Different standards in different environments.

Feed back is of great importance.

Different aims and objectives of the same programmes worldwide.

Quality Issues in Higher Education (Institutional Requirements)

Academic Buildings and related services.

Academic and administrative structure.

Academic staff.

Libraries.

Admission requirements.

Teaching and learning resources.

Other supportive buildings and services.

Information Systems and Information Technology Enhancement.

Programme Private Requirements

Institutional Infrastructure of the Quality Assurance

Department Level: At this level, all the concrete processes are implemented including curriculum design, resource availability, staff developments, and others.

Faculty level: Different departments in the same faculty have a lot in common, for example curriculum development plans, resources management, and others.

Institution (University) level: Strategic planning for different faculties is usually taken at this level.

Ministry level: The overall strategic planning, rules, regulations, and decisions are taken at this level

What is Quality Assurance (QA) process?

Activities for carrying out self-assessment in terms of institution

Identifying weaknesses and strengths, opportunities and threats of an institution.

Periodic performance assessments of the institution are to be conducted

Measuring the degree of success in institutional objectives and the effectiveness of strategies and objectives.

Improving the weak points that revealed after the previous assessment.

QA process :
